What changes have you seen in seafood industry throughout this year? What kind of promotion/work you have done in order to maintain a leading position in this competitive China market? We do solely focus on salmon, so I can only speak about salmon with in depth knowledge. But what we have seen is quite a dynamic market. The biggest global volume growth (in percentage) in the last 6 years has been pivotal to absorb the great demand growth in some of the largest salmon markets in the world like US and China. In China specifically, although the “comeback” of Norwegian salmon in the market was making the headlines, this year has for me been the year of Chilean salmon taking a strong position in the fresh market. This is of course a result of several factors, better logistic solutions and not at least high average weight of fish is the first one that springs to mind. This year has also been a year where more consumer friendly packages has been offered to more consumers, hence the strong growth in the US and China. For Cermaq, as the 2ndbiggest supplier of Atlantic salmon in 2018, this year has been mostly about being able to supply our partners with as much big fish as possible from our three origin Canada, Chile and Norway, which is a challenge when it only counts for approx. 10 % of our production and it vary from week to week. Next year we are expecting to work more closely with our partners to promote salmon in general and our high quality salmon – not at least our fish from Norway, which is all raised above the Arctic circle, which creates some unique feature to the fish. Question Two: What is your outlook or vision towards the coming year 2019? Do you see any trend or shifting in the industry and how it will affect your business? In a global business that we are, the ongoing trade conflicts are of course something we closely monitoring. Hopefully we will see some positive development in that direction in the coming year. With the expected lack of supply growth, it is expected that the re-allocation of volumes will continue, resulting in markets/segments with a more price sensitive profile will suffer. In China specifically I do expect to see the acceptance for smaller fish increasing. There are several reasons for this: 1. To secure reliable supply week in and week out – not at least with the increased awareness among Chinese consumers, they want to know where the fish is coming from and hence supply smaller fish from their traditional suppliers. 2. More fish will be processed to offer more convenience to the consumers,and for that a smaller fish is more ideal. The implication of this for us, will be the opportunity to worker even closer with our partners in China, so we together long term can better satisfy the Chinese consumers’ demands. We are of course curious to see how the Chinese market will develop with the Chinese governments encouragement to stimulate domestic demand will effect the salmon market. |
